Fractured Hip

A hip fracture is a serious injury that requires prompt surgical treatment. Dr. Hunter’s trauma fellowship training provides expertise in treating these injuries.

Hip Fracture is a Medical Emergency

If you suspect a hip fracture, call 911 or go to the emergency room immediately. Early surgery leads to better outcomes.

Understanding Hip Fractures

A hip fracture is a break in the upper portion of the femur (thighbone). Most hip fractures occur in older adults with osteoporosis, often from a fall. In younger patients, hip fractures typically result from high-energy trauma such as car accidents.

Hip fractures almost always require surgical treatment. The type of surgery depends on the location and severity of the fracture, as well as the patient’s age and overall health. Dr. Hunter completed a trauma fellowship in Auckland, New Zealand, providing specialized expertise in treating these injuries.

Symptoms

  • Severe pain in the hip or groin
  • Inability to bear weight on the affected leg
  • Shortened leg on the injured side
  • Leg turned outward on the injured side
  • Bruising and swelling around the hip
  • Stiffness and inability to move the hip

Types of Hip Fractures

Femoral Neck Fracture

Break in the neck of the femur, just below the ball of the hip joint

Intertrochanteric Fracture

Break between the neck and lower part of the femur

Subtrochanteric Fracture

Break below the trochanters, in the upper femur shaft

Surgical Treatment Options

Surgery is typically performed within 24-48 hours to reduce complications.

Internal Fixation

Metal screws, plates, or rods to hold bones in place while healing

Partial Hip Replacement

Replacing the femoral head when the socket is healthy

Total Hip Replacement

Replacing both the ball and socket, often for displaced fractures in active patients

Recovery & Rehabilitation

  • Physical therapy begins soon after surgery to restore mobility
  • Most patients can walk with assistance within days of surgery
  • Full recovery typically takes 3-6 months
  • Bone-strengthening treatments may be recommended to prevent future fractures
