Sports Medicine Excellence

What is ACL Reconstruction?

ACL reconstruction is a surgical procedure to replace a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL), one of the major ligaments in the knee. The ACL connects your thighbone to your shinbone and is essential for knee stability, especially during cutting, pivoting, and jumping movements.

Dr. Hunter performs ACL reconstruction using arthroscopic techniques, which means smaller incisions, less pain, and faster recovery. The torn ligament is replaced with a graft—either from your own body (autograft) or from a donor (allograft)—which serves as scaffolding for a new ligament to grow.

With his fellowship training in sports medicine from Unisports in New Zealand, where he worked with elite athletes including members of the All Blacks and New Zealand Olympic teams, Dr. Hunter brings world-class expertise to every ACL reconstruction.

Do You Need ACL Surgery?

Not everyone with an ACL tear needs surgery. However, reconstruction is often recommended for active individuals who want to return to sports. Common signs that you may benefit from ACL reconstruction include:

  • Knee gave out or buckled during activity
  • Heard a "pop" at the time of injury
  • Significant swelling within hours of injury
  • Feeling of instability when walking or cutting
  • Unable to return to sports due to knee giving way
  • Positive ACL tear confirmed on MRI

Why Choose Dr. Hunter?

  • Arthroscopic minimally invasive surgery
  • Multiple graft options available
  • Personalized rehab protocols
  • Return-to-sport programs
  • Sports-specific training guidance
  • High success rates for athletes
