Knee Osteoarthritis
Knee osteoarthritis is the most common form of arthritis in the knee, causing pain, stiffness, and reduced mobility. Learn about stages and treatment options.
What is Knee Osteoarthritis?
Knee osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease where the protective cartilage that cushions the ends of bones gradually wears away. As the cartilage deteriorates, bones may rub against each other, causing pain, swelling, and stiffness.
This is the most common type of arthritis and typically develops over time. While it can’t be reversed, many treatments can relieve symptoms and slow progression. In severe cases, knee replacement surgery can restore mobility and eliminate pain.
Stages of Knee Osteoarthritis
Stage 1 - Minor
Small bone spurs may develop. Little to no pain or discomfort.
Stage 2 - Mild
More noticeable bone spurs. Stiffness after periods of inactivity.
Stage 3 - Moderate
Cartilage between bones shows obvious damage. Frequent pain with activity.
Stage 4 - Severe
Significant cartilage loss. Bone-on-bone contact causes constant pain.
Symptoms
- Pain that increases with activity and improves with rest
- Stiffness, especially in the morning or after sitting
- Swelling in and around the knee
- Decreased range of motion
- Grinding or crackling sensation with movement
- Feeling of instability or "giving way"
