Snapping Hip Syndrome

Snapping hip syndrome causes a snapping sensation or sound when moving the hip. While often painless, it can become problematic. Learn about causes and treatments.

What is Snapping Hip?

Snapping hip syndrome, also called coxa saltans, is a condition where you feel or hear a snapping sensation in the hip when walking, running, or swinging your leg. The snapping is usually caused by a muscle or tendon moving over a bony structure in the hip.

This condition is common in dancers, athletes, and young adults. In many cases, snapping hip is painless and requires no treatment. However, if the snapping becomes painful or affects your activities, treatment may be beneficial.

Types of Snapping Hip

External (Lateral) Snapping Hip

Most common type. The iliotibial band or gluteus maximus snaps over the greater trochanter on the outside of the hip.

Location: Outer hip

Internal (Anterior) Snapping Hip

The iliopsoas tendon snaps over a bony prominence in the pelvis or femoral head.

Location: Front of hip/groin

Intra-articular Snapping

Caused by problems inside the joint itself, such as labral tears or loose bodies.

Location: Deep in the hip joint

Symptoms

  • Audible snapping or popping sound with hip movement
  • Feeling of the hip "catching" or "giving way"
  • Pain in the front, side, or back of the hip
  • Snapping that occurs with specific movements
  • Weakness or tightness in the hip
  • Pain that worsens with activity
